Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of working with my client Blue Man Group on a Summer Stock Up food drive to benefit Three Square, which is basically Las Vegas’ local food bank.   Essentially, we asked Las Vegas residents and tourists alike to come down to the Blue Man Group Theatre inside the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino between a four hour period on Saturday, May 21st and make a food donation.  Those that donated a bag of non-perishable food would receive a free ticket to Blue Man Group that night.   As I PR person, I had nightmares what if no one shows up?  I knew we had done our job and got the message out, but will they come?  So how many people would want to donate food for the Summer Stock Up?  The food drive would  benefit children from low income homes, who are unable to take advantage of school lunch programs during the summer break.   Las Vegas showed up in numbers.  There was a line of more than 300 people by 9:45 a.m. – 15 minutes prior to the start of the drive.   I breathed a sigh of relief and then just smiled.  I watched this city’s generosity in full effect.  There were parents with their kids, tourists, couples and grandparents with their grandkids.   They  donated a variety of items including cereal boxes, fruit cups, granola and breakfast bars, crackers, cookie packs, juice packs, sunflower seed packets, canned fruit, trail mix, raisins and more.  They came with bags, cases and their hearts full of passion for their community.   Over 6,230 pounds of food was collected during the four hour food drive which is the equivalent to 4,872 meals.  Las Vegas cares.   Las Vegas listens…which is good news for a publicist!   Las Vegas kids will have a better summer.  Thank you Las Vegas for never disappointing me.   As a community, we truly do care about making a difference and helping out those less fortunate.
